LME Announces Record Full Year Exchange Volumes for 2006

The London Metal Exchange (LME) has today announced its annual volume figures for 2006. The results reveal another record year for the Exchange with nearly 87 million lots traded, an increase of 10.6% on 2005 figures.

Six contracts saw futures volume growth of more than 10% per cent on 2005. These were the primary HG aluminium contract which grew 19.7% to 36.4 million lots; the tin contract which grew 17.2% to over 1.2 million lots; the nickel contract which grew 20.0% to 4.2 million lots; lead grew 12.5% to over 4.5 million lots; and zinc grew 10.2% to 11.7 million lots.

Commenting on the results, Martin Abbott, LME Chief Executive said:

“2006 has seen record volumes reflecting the high levels of liquidity at the LME and throughout the year, a transparent and orderly market has been maintained.

“As we enter the LME’s 130th year of operation, I have set a target of doubling the volume of business within the next three to five years. In so doing we remain committed to strengthening the LME’s leading role in the world of non-ferrous metals and plastics and to extending this role into areas where we have true competitive advantage.”

Notes to Editors:

  • The LME is the world’s premier non-ferrous metals market.
  • Trading at the LME takes place through open outcry in ‘the ring’, through an inter-office telephone market and through LME Select.
  • On 4 January 2007 the LME announced its “2 by 2” growth strategy designed to double the volume of its business within the next three to five years.
