World production: 213,000 tonnes
Molybdenum was first discovered in 1778 and has a world production of 213,000 tonnes (2007). Molybdenum is commonly a by-product of copper mining and is mainly sourced in Chile. It has the ability to withstand extreme temperatures and has a high resistance to corrosion.
Molybdenum is widely used as an alloy agent in stainless steel. It is also used to manufacture aircraft parts and industrial motors.
