In 2021 we partnered with two responsible sourcing charities – Pact and The Impact Facility, with the aim of tackling child labour and children’s rights issues in mining communities directly affected by these responsible sourcing concerns. We are donating $1.7m across two distinct projects, both of which focus on reducing the number of children working in mines. You can find out more about both charities and the projects we are involved in below.
We are funding a three-year project that Pact, a non-profit international development organisation and expert in artisanal and small-scale mining, will be undertaking in the central and copper-belt provinces of Zambia. The project involves working with communities to deliver improved access to education, social services, vocational training and other activities, with the aim of supporting the reduction of the number of children working in mines.
In her first blog post, the LME's new Responsible Sourcing Manager Nicole Hanson shares the latest news from Pact on their work in Zambia.

We have also partnered with The Impact Facility, a global sustainability organisation that seeks to bring economic and environmental empowerment to artisanal and small-scale mining communities. We are funding a three-year project that they are undertaking as part of the multi-stakeholder Fair Cobalt Alliance (FCA). The project is designed to significantly reduce the numbers of children working in mines, through providing support to existing schools in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, encouraging attendance and raising the quality of care for students.
